Least Restraint
Eastern Health has a Least Restraint Policy that promotes the minimal use of restraints to enhance resident care and safety. A restraint is anything used to limit an individual’s ability to move his/her/their body or body parts. There are various types of restraints.
Using restraints will be the last approach used to prevent injury. A restraint is a temporary measure used when all other approaches have been tried and determined to not work in keeping you and/or others safe.
If a restraint is used, its use will be assessed and monitored on a continual basis.
There can be physical and mental health risks associated with using restraints, so alternatives to restraints are attempted whenever possible. Alternatives exist and the key is to find a solution based on your individual condition, needs and behaviours.
Family members have an important role to play in keeping residents in a safe and comfortable environment with the least restraint possible.
Things family members can do to assist
- Discuss any fears or concerns with staff.
- Try to be open-minded about the use of alternatives if a restraint has been used in the past.
- Work with staff as a team member. Your input will help provide the best possible care for your loved one.
